This evening we welcome back guest Dr. Philip Lubin alongside Travis Brashears to discuss their latest Kickstarter, “Voices of Humanity” featuring Humanity Chip, the world’s space time capsule. You might have heard Dr. Lubin discussing Breakthrough Starshot on the show before, talking about the roadmap he created behind the $100 million-dollar project backed by Yuri Milner to send mobile space exporation labs out to Alpha Centauri and beyond at roughly 20% the speed of light.

Our goal is to directly engage all humanity in space exploration. We want to send your dreams and aspirations to the stars! With our basic funding goal of $30,000, we will put your data on a custom spacecraft that will be launched in 2017 initially into Low Earth Orbit (LEO), then to more distant missions to the moon, Mars, etc in subsequent missions. In the future, we intend to offer the Humanity Chip to all spacecraft being launched.
Once we reach our stretch goal of $100,000, we will be able to build a sophisticated ground-based laser and robotic telescope that allows your data to be optionally transmitted via laser to the target of your choice in space. We will then be able to “beam you up” by encoding and sending your data to the stars so you will travel at the speed of light into the universe. In both cases, we will be able to “back up humanity”, using the universe as our “cloud” with your images, pictures, text, tweets, video, and DNA! Your data will live forever in the universe. You will be immortalized.
Hi, We are the Co-Founders of Directed Energy and of the Voices of Humanity campaign! I am Philip Lubin, a professor of Physics at the University of California, Santa Barbara and I am Travis Brashears, Engineering Physics student at the University of California, Berkeley.
Philip Lubin’s primary research has been focused on studies of the early universe in the millimeter wavelengths bands as well as applications of directed energy for planetary defense and relativistic propulsion. His group has designed, developed and fielded more than two dozen ground based and balloon borne missions and helped develop two major cosmology satellites. Among other accomplishments his group first detected the horizon scale fluctuations in the Cosmic Microwave Background from both their South Pole and balloon borne systems twenty years ago and their latest results, along with an international teams of ESA and NASA researchers, are from the Planck cosmology mission which have mapped in exquisite detail the structures of the early universe. He is a co-I on the Planck mission. His group has worked on applications of directed energy systems for both small scale single launcher solutions as well as large standoff systems for planetary defense and on applications to allow small interstellar probes. He is co-recipient of the 2006 Gruber Prize in Cosmology along with the COBE science team for their groundbreaking work in cosmology. He has published more than 350 papers.
Travis Brashears is an Engineering Physics and Pre-Business double major at UC Berkeley. He has done two years of research on directed energy applications at UC Santa Barbara. He has published two papers as first author in this area and also has devised one of the first “spacecraft on a chip” in my third paper. Travis is now pursuing High Powered Rocketry and is on the Aerodynamics team for the Cal Solar Car Team at UC Berkeley.
For the past seven years, we have been working with directed energy systems and their applications to space exploration. We are so optimistic about the future of directed energy for non-traditional applications that we started a company outside of our university-research environment to continue to explore the applications of directed energy systems.
